OUTSIDE THE U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL, U.N. HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2010
MR. MELKERT: Let me just briefly say that I’m happy with the support by the Security Council for the efforts undertaken by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq.
The Security Council has underlined that it’s a matter of urgency that the new government will be formed in the interest of the Iraqi people, also in the interest of addressing the exit from Chapter 7, as has been highlighted by the Iraqi delegation as a strong wish from the Iraqi government understandably. But it requires a government with a full mandate to elaborate on that and prepare the ground, and we hope that we can further support and advise all parties in Baghdad to come together and join hands in forming an inclusive government. And we consider the statements by the Security Council members this morning as support for our work, and, indeed, for the Iraqi political parties and people.
